The knowledge about the communication between genes and food compounds, such as nutrients and bioactive compounds, enabled the emergence of two new sciences, named nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics. Nutrigenomics refers to the study of how these compounds can act in the genetic expression modulation, while nutrigenetics studies the effect of genetic variation in the diet and disease interaction, with the identifi cation of genes responsible for different responses to diet. Given the importance of understanding the interaction between diet and gene, whereas the substances found in food can modify phenotype, the purpose of the present work is to search and gather literature data about the main advances in nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics, thus contributing to the updated education of students and health professionals. In order to achieve it, an extensive bibliographic research was done into the main scientifi c electronic database Pubmed and Medline, using the descriptors Nutrigenomics, Nutritional Genomics, Nutrigenetics. Data observed in literature state that environmental factors, mainly the diet, can initiate different responses among individuals due to genetic variability or polymorphisms. The current technology allows the identifi cation of more than thousand polymorphisms per person.

The WSJ article presents the different opinions that exist proving that we are in the beginning of an exciting new era with lots to learn and discover. For example, last May, the International Society of Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenomics ISNN published a statement about the fields of precision nutrition and the same has done the American Heart Association AHA regarding nutrigenomics and cardiometabolic health earlier this year.
But, is it always like that when it comes to innovation? Is it always like that when it comes to novel medicine advances? Indeed, it is. However, people do not need another weight-loss myth to keep struggling with their weight problems and we, as researchers, should prevent the creation of unwarranted expectations. These are the only ones who can accurately interpretate nutrigenetic results and follow them up continuously towards a profound lifestyle change that will respect their individuality and will last.
After all, if a genetic test could help us, that easy, to find the perfect diet and lose weight, obesity should not have been a worldwide epidemic, right?
