Marginal notes refer to various biblical manuscripts and Bible translations. Various appendices provide information about the Greek alphabet and prepositions, maps of Palestine in the first century, and information about editorial decisions relating to the text of the New World Translation. A characteristic of this translation is that the name Jehovah was inserted in the citations to the Hebrew scriptures in which the tetragrammaton is found. Reception[ edit ] Thomas Winter, an instructor of Greek at the University of Nebraska and former president of the Unitarian Church of Lincoln, considered The Kingdom Interlinear Translation of the Greek Scriptures to be a "highly useful aid toward the mastery of koine and classical Greek": [2] The mixmastered Latin of the normal interlinear is anathema to any classicist, and probably hinders the student user more than it helps him.

But since this book short-cuts the mechanical and distracting lexicon-thumbing while presenting an unretouched text, I think it is a legitimate and highly useful aid toward the mastery of koine and classical Greek.

After examining a copy, I equipped several interested second-year Greek students with it as an auxiliary text. No assignments were made in it: the students, combining their wish to learn Greek with a natural interest in the original of the New Testament, dipped into it on their own.

They read the Greek I strongly recommended reading it aloud , picked up the English more or less subliminally, and ended up improving their Greek. After learning the proper pronunciations, a motivated student could probably learn koine Greek from this source alone. The text is based on that of Brooke F.

Westcott and Fenton J. Hort ,repr. Where both the King James and the Revised Standard , for instance, have "wise men" for the Greek magoi e. The book has been very carefully compiled and printed.

Overall review[ edit ] In its review of Bible translations released from to , The HarperCollins Bible Dictionary listed the New World Translation as one of the major modern translations. It included essays responding to criticism of the New World Translation from non-Witnesses, and included a bibliography of reviews of the work. Rowley concluded, "From beginning to end this [first] volume is a shining example of how the Bible should not be translated. Metzger concluded that "on the whole, one gains a tolerably good impression of the scholarly equipment of the translators," [24] [87] but identified instances where the translation has been written to support doctrine, with "several quite erroneous renderings of the Greek. In , Unitarian theologian Charles F. Potter stated about the New World Translation: "Apart from a few semantic peculiarities like translating the Greek word stauros as "stake" instead of "cross" , and the often startling use of the colloquial and the vernacular, the anonymous translators have certainly rendered the best manuscript texts, both Greek and Hebrew, with scholarly ability and acumen.

And, at least from the third century A. Hence the modern translator is warranted in using the divine name as an equivalent of those two words Thayer, where on page 65, Thayer says of Kurios that the title is given to God; and on page Thayer says Theos is equivalent to Jehovah. We had a pleasant visit and exchanged telephone numbers as they agreed to return so that we might talk some more. A cell-phone call from their car set the time for the next meeting. It became apparent on this second visit that they had understood me to be a potential convert, which I am not. When I made a phone call to set the time for the promised meeting, he declined.
